Manmohan Singh was an Indian politician, bureaucrat and economist. He was the 13th Prime Minister of India. In 2009 he won the Lok Sabha election and became the Prime Minister of India for the second consecutive time after Jawaharlal Nehru. He contributed significantly to economic reforms in India as Finance Minister in the Prime Ministership of P. V. Narasimha Rao. In 1991 Manmohan Singh was elected to the Rajya Sabha of Assam.

Manmohan Singh was born on 26 September 1932 in Gah, Chakwal, Punjab, British India (Now Punjab, Pakistan) and died on 26 December 2024 at the age of 92. He received his education from Khalsa High School For Boys, Peshawar. He completed his graduation from Government College, Punjab University, Hoshiarpur and did M.A. in Economics from Government college, Punjab. He then received Economy Tripos from University of Cambridge in 1957 and Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Oxford on 1960.

Manmohan Singh Career

  • Manmohan Singh worked for the United Nations Conference on Development and Development from 1966 to 1969.
  • In 1969 he worked with Lalit Narayan Mishra, the then Cabinet Minister of External Affairs.
  • From 1969 to 1971 he worked as an International Dialogue Professor at the Delhi School of Economics and University of Delhi.
  • He was appointed as a member of the Planning Commission from 1980 to 1982. He was appointed as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985. In 1985 he was made the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission of India.
  • He also served as the Secretary General of the South Commission in Geneva, Switzerland from 1987 to 1990.
  • He was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the first time in 1991 and was sworn in as Finance Minister in the government of Narasimha Rao.
  • From 1998 to 2004 he was the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha.
  • In 1999 Manmohan Singh contested the Lok Sabha elections from South Delhi but lost to BJP candidate Vijay Kumar Malhotra.

  • In 2001 Manmohan Singh was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the third time from Assam.
  • On 22 May 2009 he was elected to the Lok Sabha for the second time as the Prime Minister of India.
  • In 2013 he was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the fifth time from Assam.
  • After the defeat of the Congress in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections he resigned from the post of Prime Minister of India on 7 May 2014.
  • In 2019 he was elected to the Rajya Sabha for Rajasthan.
  • In 2019 a Bollywood film based on his life ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ was released in which the role of Manmohan Singh was played by actor Anupam Kher.

  • In 2006, the University of Cambridge conferred on him the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law.

  • In 2005, the University of Oxford conferred on him the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law.
  • In 2002, he was awarded the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award by the Indian Parliamentary Group.
  • In 1987, he was conferred the ‘Padma Vibhushan’ award by the Government of India.
  • In 1983, he was conferred the ‘Doctor of Letters’ award by the Punjab University.
  • In 1956, he was awarded the Adam Smith Prize by the University of Cambridge.
  • In 1954, he was awarded the University Medal by the Punjab University for securing first position in M.Sc. in Economics.
