Sharmishta Panoli is a law student and social media influencer who is pursuing law in Pune. She recently came into the limelight after she uploaded a video giving a controversial statement on ‘Operation Sindoor’. Sharmishta Panoli Controversy & Arrest
Sharmishta Panoli came into the limelight after ‘Operation Sindoor’ in May 2025 when she uploaded a video in which she allegedly used derogatory language against the Islamic prophet Muhammad. This led to outrage in the Muslim community. She also made videos Bollywood celebrities for their silence about Operation Sindoor.
Following public criticism, Sharmishta Panoli unconditionally apology on her Instagram story and Twitter on May 15 and also deleted the video. Wajahat Khan, general secretary of Kolkata’s Rashidi Foundation, has filed an FIR against her with a complaint of disturbing social harmony. He has also attached photos from her Instagram account and Twitter account.
The FIR was registered under the following sections.
- 196(1)(a) – promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, caste or community
- 299 – deliberate and malicious acts with intent to outrage religious feelings of any class of citizens
- 352 – intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace
- 353(1)(c) of the Indian Penal Code – statements inciting public nuisance
The police tried to send her notices several times, but when she did not appear, the court issued an arrest warrant. But on 31 May 2025, she was arrested by Kolkata Police in Gurugram after FIR No. 136 was registered against her at Garden Reach Police Station. After the arrest, actress and politician Kangana Ranaut supported her and demanded her release. She was produced in a Gurugram court after which she was brought to Kolkata, where she was sent to judicial custody till 13 June.
